2023 Sangiovese
DESCRIPTION
Sangiovese is one of the most recognized Italian red grape varieties. It is a moderately thick skinned variety, prone to setting large crops, and usually light in color. Typically, Sangiovese holds onto its acidity and is not overly tannic, and is lighter in body. The 2023 vintage was a particularly hot growing season, with daily triple digit temperatures lasting for 6+ weeks. The yield was moderate, but the overall color intensity was affected by the heat. Fermentation was carried out in stainless steel with an average of 21 days on the skins. Post fermentation, the wine was racked to French oak barrels and aged for 15 months. The resulting wine has a classic garnet color with lavender edges and red-hued translucency. Toasty oak aromas are dominant, with black cherry juice and strawberry jam fragrances showing through the warm wood spices. A delicate leafy character opens into fine purse leather and slight cedar notes. The flavors are crisp, with the inherent acidity keeping the tannic edges just edgy enough to make the second and third sips mouth watering and appealing. A very complex wine with all the hallmarks of a great Chianti or Brunello. Pair with grilled meats and baked pasta dishes. This wine will age beautifully over the next five to seven years.
